Air plants (Tillandsia) are tropical plants that don't need soil to grow. They absorb water and nutrients through their leaves and are easy to display in creative ways!
Nope! Air plants are epiphytes, which means they grow naturally on trees or rocks - they don't require soil.
Soak your air plant in room-temperature water for 20-30 minutes once a week. Dry your air plant upside down to ensure that no water remains in the recesses of the plant. Rainwater is the best, but you can safely use tap water. Do not use distilled.
Air plants love bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sun for long periods, as it can scorch their leaves.
It's optional. Use a bromeliad or air-plant specific fertilizer as directed to encourage blooming and pups.
Misting can be done between soakings, especially in dry environments/seasons. Misting alone is not enough long-term - they still require a weekly soak.
Healthy air plants have firm green or silvery leaves. Signs of trouble include browning tips, mushy/blackened bases, or curled/dry leaves.
Blooming is a natural part of an air plant's life cycle. After blooming most varieties produce baby plants called, "pups".
Pups are little offsets or baby plants that grow at the base of a mature plant. Once they reach roughly 1/3 of the size of the parent plant, they can be gently separated or left behind to form a clump.
Anywhere with good air circulation! You can use wood, driftwood, terrariums, shells, hanging displays, or ceramic holders - just avoid anything that retains moisture and do not plant in soil!
